Wicked Weekend Review ~ Rising Tide: Dark Innocence by Claudette Melanson

risingtideAn Amazing Find!!!

by Sherri

I just absolutely loved this book! I’m especially happy I found it after the 2nd book, Undertow came out. That way I don’t have to wait to see what happens after the cliffhanger Ms. Melanson left us with. I’ve already 1-clicked the sequel, and I cannot wait to start it:)

I won’t give away the secrets of this book for potential new readers. Discovery of a really amazing book is the fun of reading in the first place. There is one thing I do want to address, though. Several reviews have mentioned how odd it seems for Maura to refer to her mother as Caelyn instead of Mom for much of the book. I found this to be a brilliant touch of ‘showing’ instead of ‘telling’. I got it, I really did. Caelyn had her daughter at a very young age, and in some ways, the two of them have grown up together. Caelyn is fiercely protective of her daughter, but she is emotionally dependent on her too, and in several ways, she’s allowed Maura to take over the role of parent. They have an extremely complicated relationship, and all of the secrets between them don’t help them to understand each other.

I’m extremely impressed by the excellent way this book was written. Good writing is a combination of learned skill and innate talent, and Ms. Melanson has both. I love discovering new writers, and I look forward to watching her career blossom. If you’re wondering whether to give this book a shot, just download the free sample, and see how fast it gets you hooked!

Book Blurb

Could Maura’s life get any worse? …turns out it most certainly can.

Isolated and sheltered by her lonely mother, Maura’s never been able to make friends. She seems to drive her classmates away—except for the odd times they pay enough attention to torture her—but she doesn’t understand why. Maura considers herself to be a freak of nature, with her unusually pale skin and an aversion to the sun that renders her violently nauseous. Her belief is only worsened by the fact that almost everyone around her keeps their distance.

Even her own father deserted her before she was born, leaving Maura alone with her emotionally distant mother, Caelyn. Even though Maura is desperate for answers about her unknown parent, Caelyn remains heartbroken and her daughter can’t bring herself to reopen her mother’s wounds. Or is there a more sinister reason Caelyn refuses to utter a word about her long-lost love?

When a cruel prank nearly claims Maura’s life, one of her classmates, Ron, rushes to her rescue. Darkly handsome & mysteriously accepting, Ron doesn’t seem to want to stay away, but Maura is reluctant to get too close, since her mother has announced she’s moving the two of them to Vancouver…nearly 3,000 miles away from their hometown of Indiana, Pennsylvania.

If life wasn’t already challenging enough, Maura begins to experience bizarre, physical changes her mother seems hell bent on ignoring, compelling Maura to fear for her own life. Vicious nightmares, blood cravings, failing health and the heart-shattering loss of Ron—as well as the discovery of a tangled web of her own mother’s lies—become obstacles in Maura’s desperate quest for the unfathomable truth she was never prepared to uncover.

Wicked Weekend Review ~ Wings of Shadow by Sherri A. Wingler

A Spectacular Sequel

by emmy

Wings of Shadow is the second book in the Immortal Sorrows Series by Sherri Wingler and it’s brilliant. It’s the continuation of Izzy and Asher’s story that we met in Wings of Darkness that is also brilliant and a perfect continuation of the series that I hope we get many more books out of.

Wingler sets the action immediately following the end of Wings of Darkness and is set in Hell. Wingler’s take on Hell, reapers, the devil and politics of Hell is one I’ve never read before, and I loved it. Sticking with our no spoiler review policy it’s hard to talk too much about specifics this is a series you need to read for yourself.

The only thing I didn’t like about it was we didn’t get to see too much of a couple characters from Wings of Darkness who were freaking awesome. But I’ve heard from the author that their story will be book three… is book three done yet? I’m waiting not so patiently for it.

Wings of Shadow is amazing but can not be read as a stand alone novel. But that’s okay because the Immortal Sorrows Series is exciting and enjoyable series that I can’t recommend enough.

Book Blurb

Mortals never see me in their final moments. Isabel saw me. From the very beginning. She saw me, knew me for the monster I am, and still she loved me. That beautiful, young woman with fire in her blood. I wanted her the moment I laid eyes on her. She was perfect, made just for me by a cruel and merciless twist of Fate. Isabel was my mate and my match, in every way, but loving me destroyed her.

Fate stole my love from me, simply to watch me suffer. Oh, it had cost her, but not nearly enough. A few dead Reapers were nothing compared to what I would do when I found her. The River of the Dead could run red with the blood of the guilty, and it would never be enough. My revenge would be a bitter-sweet thing, for it would never bring my Isabel back to me. Once she faced Judgment, she would be lost to me, forever.
I could not accept that. I would not.

Author’s note: Please be aware that “Wings of Shadow” is book 2 of The Immortal Sorrows series, and cannot be read as a stand-alone book. It is the continuation of Izzy’s and Asher’s story, and takes place directly after the conclusion of book 1, “Wings of Darkness,” which is available now, exclusively through Amazon.

Wicked Weekend Review ~ Craved by an Alpha by Felicity Heaton

cravedbyanalphaCraving More

by emmy

Craved by an Alpha is the fifth book in the Eternal Mates series by Felicity Heaton, which I love. But this one left me wanting a little more. I enjoyed it, it was a great story, and perhaps I’m reviewing it too harshly because I loved the first four so much. But I just didn’t get as invested in the story like I did with the others. Not that I would recommend skipping it, no don’t do that it is a great story, just not my favorite in the series.

Craved by an Alpha is the story of Cavanaugh and Eloise. They were childhood friends that led to something more, until he became Alpha of their village. She was the one he always turned to until her rank, standing, and societal standards stopped them from being together. And then he watched her drift away, and she watched him being fawned over by women of standing who could become the Alpha’s mate.

A rule within their society says that if the Alpha is challenged and loses but does not lose his life is still Alpha unless they do not step foot in the village for five years. So that’s what he does, he runs, disappeared, and was waiting out the five years until he could go back and claim his mate. That’s when we met him first, working behind the bar at Kyrter’s nightclub waiting. But, Eloise shows up before the five years are up to bring him back and become Alpha once again to save their people from the tyrannical Alpha he left them with. What to do?

Craved by an Alpha is a great read and the Eternal Mates books themselves I can’t recommend enough!

Having turned his back on his snow leopard pride, Cavanaugh has been counting the days until he’s free of a role he never wanted—one that separated him from his fated female and stands between him and the future he craves with her.

Just days from the night he will finally be free to be with the low-ranking beauty who stole his heart, she walks back into his life and threatens to destroy everything he’s worked towards in the five long years they’ve been apart.

Eloise has travelled across continents searching for the male who was once her best friend and so much more to her, but was now her pride’s true alpha. Desperate to fulfil a promise to her kin to save them from the tyrant he left in charge, she convinces Cavanaugh to return to his pride, but as they journey to Bhutan, doubts bloom and old feelings resurface, tearing her between duty and her deepest desires and impossible dreams.

Will Eloise be able to resist the burning need that Cavanaugh reignites in her and remember her place in the pride? And can Cavanaugh find a way to save his kin and claim the future he craves with the woman he loves?

Wicked Weekend Review ~ Consume Me (Ravage MC Book 3) by Ryan Michele

Consume Me ~ Yes, Please

by emmy

Wow. Consume Me (Ravage MC Book 3) was the first in the Ravage MC series I read, and now I have to go back and read the first two. Not because I was lost, or confused about events that happened in the other books, no this can be read as a stand alone without any issues. I have to go back and read them because I loved the story and its characters so much I want to read them for myself.

Consume me is the story of Blaze, who is running from her past and Tug, who is running towards his future. He’s a prospect for Ravage MC, and she’s an exotic dancer from the club the MC runs X. The chemistry between Tug and Blaze is practically palatable, it’s hot, sexy, and will leave you fanning yourself.

The entire cast of characters and the MC itself is compelling, intriguing, and like I already said, I’m going back for more. I read this in one sitting, couldn’t sleep until I found out how it ended. I’m a little bummed I just discovered this series now but now that I have I can’t wait for more!

If you like sexy stories about badass tattooed bikers and the women, they love… This series is for you!

Wicked Weekend Review ~ Butterfly by Sammie J

Spread Your Wings and Fly~

by emmy

I am a fan of Sammie J.’s. Her other novels are in the paranormal romance genre, which honestly is my favorite to read. That being said, Butterfly her first contemporary / new adult romance hit me hard, left me thinking, and calling my mom and dad to tell them I love them because you never know right?

Butterfly is the story of loss and love, betrayal and honor, friendship and learning to love again. It’s about Evie, who has just gotten out of prison for a crime she didn’t commit and needs to reclaim her life. That’s easier said than done considering everything she had been through in prison and before that with the death of her father.

Support from new friends, new job, a therapist, her mother’s boyfriend, Simon (I dare you not to love him) and the will to make her life better help Evie. But something from her past comes back to haunt her. Sticking to our strict “spoiler free” review rules it’s hard to tell you too much about it. You need to read this one for yourself.

Sammie J. does not shy away from subjects many folks may find uncomfortable and offers a very real look at someone trying to start over in spite of everything that has happened around and to her. Butterfly is a story that will stay with you for a long time after you finish.

I can’t recommend this book enough. It’ll make you laugh, it’ll make you cry, it’ll make you wonder about a lot of things many would rather not think about. Like the prison system, the elite and their crimes, the victims, the kids, and how unfair life can be. But it also shows us how in spite of it all that we can learn to live again.

Evie Reynolds was not supposed to end up in prison, but she did when her boyfriend Zach Daniels and his family put her there. They took away her freedom, starting a chain of events which would change her life forever. But Evie has held on to a secret, the one saving grace from the hell she suffered at the hands of the prison system. Over five years later, Evie is about to go home where she’ll play the biggest role of her life.

A new start isn’t always easy when you still have emotional wounds, especially when your mother’s insecurities have a tendency to wreak havoc on everything. However, Evie’s sister Lily is her light in the darkness, the one person she would do anything to protect. A push in the right direction comes when her mother’s boyfriend gives her a job in his company. Evie finds a friend in Amelia, a woman with no mouth filter, while a chance meeting with another co-worker brings her an instant enemy: Charlie Daniels, brother of her pre-prison boyfriend. Charlie is the one man she should keep her distance from, yet she can’t help being intrigued by him.

Looking to leave her past behind once and for all, Evie seeks help to find relief from the nightmares plaguing her. Too bad her past isn’t willing to let go of her yet. Just when she starts to find happiness in her new life, her past catches up to her, threatening to reveal her deepest, darkest secret.

Will Amelia and Charlie stand by Evie when they find out the truth? Will those she loves most help her stop the blackmail threatening to take away the most important thing in her world? A fragile butterfly, will Evie be able to spread her wings and grab a hold of the future she craves before it’s too late?

WARNING. DO NOT BUY UNTIL READING THIS DISCLAIMER!! This book is written in British English, in first person POV. Butterfly deals with loss, non-consensual sexual assault and psychological manipulation. May contain personal triggers. It also contains second chances in love and life with a happy ever after. It has some graphic descriptions, sexual situations and strong language. There is also a little F/F action, but mostly M/F. 18+ is advised.
